Oh man. Oh man! Last night was effing incredible. Team Magma(SOS) entered the Frontier College Spelling Bee (Frontier College is a campus based group that trains people to go into local schools and help students who are having trouble with reading how to read better). There were six teams competing, and the first round consisted of two teams facing off against each other. And, of course, who does Team Magma take on in the first round? Team NUSU of course. So we ended up tying them for the round, but took them out in the second round of the tie-breaker through a truly serendipidous bit of luck. The word we were asked to spell was pronounced 'Erinkima'. I'd never heard of it before, so I made up a mock British spelling of it: 'aerenchyma'. Which, as it turns out, is actually how you spell it. (In case you care, it's a kind of plant tissue. Or something).

The final round, composed of the winning three teams from the previous round, was a single knock-out--sepll a word wrong, you're out. We got super lucky, as our first word was 'Hemingway'. As in that Ernest guy. Once the next team was out, we went to tie breaker mode, and the word that both teams had to spell was 'acetylsalicylic acid'. Commonly known as Aspirin. Anyhow, I spelt it correctly, the other team didn't, and magma was super-victorious all around. And there was much rejoicing.

I got a sweatshirt and a makeover out of the deal. Oh yeah, and a whole lot of pride.
