it's the terror of knowing what this world is about
10:51 p.m. & 04 July 2003

Today was a total write-off. It is bloody hot, and I am slowly losing my ability to function on a plane of normal existence.

The problem, you see, arises from work today. I have a coworker I don't care for. I don't like her (very cavalier) attitude towards work and her constant touchy feelyness. Yesterday I had a conversation with our boss about something I had seen her do several times on site (lying down in a bed and not getting up when visitors came into the building--from both an interpretive and customer service standpoint, a huge no-no). During the course of my conversation with the jefe, he mentions to me that if you're ever caught sleeping on site, you're fired immediately. There's no warnings, nothing like that at all. Just fired. My coworker was chastised for the bed affair, and just laughed it off. Because, apparently, not doing your job is funny.

As most of you have probably figured out by now, I caught the co-worker sprawled out and asleep in one of the buildings at work today. More correctly, a visitor found her, and took pictures of her nap.

So. What to do? On one hand, I do realize that not everyone is a perfect worker all the time, and that we all do silly/stupid things at some point or another. Also, someone else losing their job is not something I'd like to have on my conscience. But at the same time, this kind of thing has a negative impact on the site and the visitors, and it isn't fair to those of us who actually do our jobs. I'm trying not to let the fact that I don't care for my coworker factor in the decision but it's not easy when she laughs about falling asleep during our break as though it's something to be proud of.

I don't know what to do, so I will continue to sit on the fence, and document my findings. And next time, I will be ready to take action. Maybe.

What would you do?
