you were the sweetest thing that I ever knew 1:04 p.m. & 08 November 2003
If there's anything I love about being in English Studies, it is simply that everything I learn about in class always presents itself somewhere else in my life. For example, in my timothy Findley class, we learned about homosocial relationships and the traditional 2 men and a woman love triangle, and how sometimes the two men both love the woman because they are transferring their feelings for each other onto her. Like in Star WArs, and in Marion Zimmer Bradley's The Mists of Avalon. So now I think about that lots.
The new thing is Edward Said's Orientalism. It's awesome--so relevant to everything that's happening in the world today. My sister bought me a book for my birthday called "The Truth About Stories" which is essentially Orientalism from a native (Indian) North American perspective and it is so good so far. It's by Thomas King, and he's a great writer, and makes me want to go to Guelph next year so I can ask him to supervise my thesis.
I had a really good day yesterday. Kori and I made supper together for the first time since we started living together (nearly 2.5 years) and it was so good. It's kind of suprising that we've never cooked together before, because I've cooked with everyone else (with the possible exception of Monty). We had pepper steaks, asparagus, Greek salad, garlic bread and the best apple pie ever for dessert.
And then we watched Braveheart, which I'd never seen. Lo and behold, Mel Gibson was actually quasi-attractive. I'm glad I finally saw the movie, it does seem funny to have been to Scotland and not have seen it. Especially since I actually went to Stirling (which is where the first battle took place) and since Robert the Bruce is buried inside the church in my dad's hometown. Now I really want to know how much of the story is actually true.
A sort of intersting thing about Stirling is that it's really in the middle of the land...but archaeologists have found whale bones there, which seems to indicate that all of Scotland was once under the sea.
I have a bag of salmon steaks I need to do something with.
