I've got all I want, is that simple enough?
11:13 p.m. & 22 January 2004

Wow...what a busy day this has been. I wrote a short test on Derek Walcott's "The Muse of History" (who, in case you're wondering, is named Clio, not that that comes up at all in the essay) which is angry polemic (is that redundant?) about Caribbean lit. I actually kinda liked it as an article, but the test was pretty challenging for something that was supposed to take only fifteen minutes...but then, I am a slow test taker and it usually takes me quite a bit to get going on stuff like that.

Taking tests and exams is a funny thing, 'cause I've developed such a complex yet stupid series of systems for taking them between high school and university...for instance, I think it is incredibly bad luck to be the first person to hand in the test, so I have to wait until someone else has handed theirs in before I can get up...on the few occasions where I am done quickly. Predominantly, I tend to be one of the very last people done. (There is nothing unlucky about being the last to hand it in, though.) I also need to have at least ten pens and two pencils. I am ridiculously compulsive about this. Generally speaking, I will only use one of these, but it is very important to me to have them....because if I don't, there is no zen of exam writing to be found.

When I got home from class there was a message waiting from the people in Ottawa, who are offering me an interview for the Parliamentary Tour Guide Program. Things that are good about this: it means my French is at a level deemed acceptable to be employed by the federal government; I am that much closer to finding gainful employment for the summer; an interview means a chance to wear my new suit. Things that are scary about this: it's a group interview, which I've never done before; I have to write a written test of my knowledge of Parliamentary history as part of the interview; I might suck. So, if you have ever been to a group interview before and wouldn't mind giving me some idea of what it is like, I would appreciate it...because I really want this job.

I have my conference presentations tomorrow, so that will actually be the first time I get to wear my new suit (it'll get a third wearing at my SMATH interview later on). I am exicted and nervous, but hopeful that all will go well. At any rate there is free pizza, and that makes me happy.

My finger tried to commit suicide today, which was pretty sad. I was zipping up my binder after class this morning and sliced it open on a piece of paper...which wouldn't have been so bad except for some reason, it was a really thick piece of paper and it went in pretty far and it looks gross.

We did the Frontier College spelling bee tonight and did fairly well, coming in second out of six teams overall...I got a nice Laura Secord gift basket for my troubles. The History profs beat us, and asked us to spread the word that the English department (who hadn't entered a team) had come in last...it was pretty fun, overall.

Not too much else is new...still trying to get my life figured out. I used to love filling in application forms, and now I'm starting to dread it...yuck. But in the end, the Finn makes everything better.
