you'd never do the same thing to me 10:14 p.m. & 23 February 2004
Thanks to everyone who has expressed concern over the Great Grad School Debacle; things seem to be working themselves out, thanks largely to the continued generosity of my profs. They were both very sweet and whipped up new letters for me very quickly, which I will mail in hard copy tomorrow, so crisis has been averted.
It was an interesting day. We got our biography/autobiography assignments back in my Paris class; and I did well, which is encouraging. I handed in my major paper today in that class, which means that 65% of my mark in that class is now officially out of my hands, and the only thing left is one more assignment, due later in March, and the attendance and participation mark. Woot for that. My history class will be in a similar place after Wednesday's class, with only the exam remaining...
So it was a bit of a crazy day, with all the running around to get the GGSD straightened out, but I found time to visit Dr. Graff (who is not enjoying Middlesex, much to my chagrin) and discuss literary reserach matters and my upcoming feminist theory seminar; and do a lot of photocopying of Ontario History and Canadian Historical Review articles for my paper. Tomorrow will be all about the writing--I have to type the paper in 12-point Courier, which will look like ass, but it is a large font, so my 8-9 pages of drivel will become a crappy looking 12-14 pages instead. And the margins are supposed to be 1.5", which I don't get at all.
I find it very interesting that while women did not really exist as citizens or persons in Canada throughout much of the nineteenth century in Canada, they could be (and were) still charged on the criminal codes of the day...you can't own a house but you can go to jail.
If you're from the North Bay community, please go here and read this--it's a picture and description of a guy thought to be in North Bay, who has been charged with two counts of aggravated sexual assault, and likes to have sex with both men and women and not tell them that he is HIV positive. Obviously there are some ethical questions involved with posting this kind of information, but in a university/college community where anonymous sex and bar hook ups are prevalent...well...forewarned is forearmed, I guess. Or am I mixing my metaphors? Does anyoen out there have any thoughts on this type of communication, and the ethical issues that surround it? I still have mixed feelings about posting this, but the article claims that this guy has a history of not complying with court orders...to say nothing of the fact that having unprotected sex (with partners who don't KNOW) when you know you're carrying HIV is, well, pretty uncool.
(Edited to add: This is entry number 400! woot! Pretty impressive for someone who can't keep a diary.")
